Applications

Actin's ability to simplify tough robotic control problems makes it the premiere choice for current and next generation robotics applications. As robotic mechanisms becomes more complex, so too must the software that controls them. Yet Actin allows this complexity to be hidden from the developer by a simple object oriented interface. Some applications for Actin are the following.

Healthcare Robots The next generation of healthcare robots, whether they be robotic scrub nurses or precision surgical robots, will need to be able to manipulate the environment in a natural way. Actin enables control of high-dof manipulators-allowing for true dexterous manipulation required for healthcare applications.

Industrial Automation Actin supports coordinated control of multiple simultaneous manipulators. This opens up new possibilities for factory automation. Specialized robot workcells can be developed from general robots that perform any number of tasks. In addition, Actin's simulation capability allows systems integrators to test out an automation solution before spending time and money building it.

Entertainment Robots Animatronics and robot toys are becoming more popular. Simple, low-cost robots that can walk, dance, and even throw objects are now available, and demand for more sophisticated toys is on the rise. Embedding Actin into the next generation of robot toys will enable unprecedented features for a relatively low per unit cost.

Agricultural Robots Due to labor shortages and increased costs, the agricultural community is looking to robotic harvesting solutions. Accommodating mobile platforms, high degree of freedom robots and (with Selectin) vision based servoing, Actin can serve as the key enabling technology for many robotic harvesting applications.

Space Robots Robots are ideal for space applications, where it is too dangers and expensive to send humans. Actin has been applied to robots designed to orbit the earth for satellite servicing or to support the International Space Station. It has also been applied to robots designed for planetary exploration.

Underwater Robots Many underwater tasks are better performed by robots than divers. Divers are less well suited for dangers and extended missions. Actin can be applied both to mobile submergible systems and to large robotic systems that reach from the surface to underwater.

Military Robots A new generation of robots is being used in Iraq and Afghanistan, replacing humans in dangerous missions, such as exploration and IED neutralization. Actin can provide military robots with the dexterity needed for accomplishing complex tasks.
