Regional Anesthesia Simulator

To effectively teach regional anesthesia procedures, a training system must be capable of conveying several important concepts. All trainees must learn: 1) How to find the injection site and the proper injection angle, 2) How to keep hand position at the proper angle and stable during the injection-this requires knowledge of the appropriate hand position for each block position, 3) proper needle placement during injection-insuring that a nerve is not pierced, and 4) the ability to assess nerve stimulation.

To achieve this, Energid is leveraging an innovative medical simulation platform that is already under development. Energid is developing a Haptics Optional Surgical Training System (HOSTS) for the U.S. Army. HOSTS is a flexible virtual reality based surgical simulator that has an untethered interface--without any physical connections between the trainee and the simulator. The HOSTS platform was designed to be modular, with components that can build simulations for different applications and levels of fidelity. With the HOSTS platform, new training scenarios are defined using an XML-based scripting language, and any procedure defined using XML can be downloaded from a server over the Internet for immediate use. Through this mechanism Energid is adding an anesthesia simulation scenario that will effectively teach the variety of skills needed for performing anesthesia procedures.
